Transparency
Transparency is required for good governance. I believe sunshine is the best disinfectant for back room deals. We’ve seen plenty of examples in the past year when the lack of transparency has led to some costly consequences for Ottawa County taxpayers.
Fiscal Responsibility
Fiscal Responsibility is a core to stewardship. Taxpayer dollars are precious and should be treated that way. Stewardship requires prudence and competence in how tax dollars are spent.
Competence
Competence in carrying out the county’s business is an expectation of Ottawa County citizens. Hiring decisions should be based on an open process where the best possible candidates for a position are invited to apply. There should be a written job description, specified qualifications, administrative staff should follow up on references, and the public is entitled to have input on key positions. Cronyism should have no place in hiring decisions.
